Hmm, interesting letter from a clearly very well-read fellow. That is where the difficulty many religious people can have with evolution lies: what signs of God do we see in Nature? Gould himself brings people to mind the tale of the ichneumon wasp: a tale to throw in the faces of those who want to look for human morality in nature. The ichneumon wasp basically procreates like the xenomorphs in Alien, laying its eggs in other insects who go through their lives unsuspectingly until the critter devours them from the inside. Some avid lutheran theologians said that the message from this creature is one of resourcefulness (...).
In my opinion, there is complexity in nature, so much so that a mere human most likely could never envision a "Grand Plan", even if he believes that such exists. I do believe it exists, and that every twist, every iota of complexity is part of some whole that only an Infinite Mind can comprehend. This is a belief, though, nothing scientific at all (how do you test for that? Therein lies the error of Intelligent Design claiming it's science: science can tell you a million things about a painting, but nothing about a painter).
